We are one of the very fortunate states that the beautiful Snowy Owl migrates to in the winter from the Arctic. In an irruption year, we can find several owls that claim an area for hunting in open flat farm lands, marsh areas, or frozen waters edges, which resemble the arctic lands they are from. There is nothing more stunning than the stare from those bright golden eyes.
As with all my photography, I can’t stress enough the importance of respect of distance to all animals. The Snowy Owl in many cases is not even familiar with humans due to the fact they come from remote Arctic areas. Many of them wintering in the area are first year juveniles. Even though they may not move when approached, they are more than likely scared stiff. If they do fledge when approached, it is extremely important to not chase. We want to keep these amazing birds returning for years to come.
